Barros Luco Sandwich Recipe

Ingredients

  • 400 g of sliced beef
  • 2 Chilean marraqueta bread
  • 4 slices of buttery cheese
  • Oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Instructions

  1. Cut the marraquetas or burger buns in half and preheat them in the oven or using a toaster. Set them aside.
  2. In a large skillet, add a splash of oil, heat it over medium-high heat, and cook the beef for 2 to 3 minutes per side until it’s well-seared and golden. Keep it warm.
  3. Reduce the heat, and in the same skillet over medium heat, place the cheese slices until they melt, being careful not to let them burn.
  4. Soak the marraquetas in the meat juices and assemble the beef on the bottom half of each marraqueta. Spread the melted cheese on top and seal the sandwiches with the other halves of the bread.
  5. Serve the Barros Luco sandwiches immediately, often accompanied by a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

Why is it called Barros Luco?

This famous Chilean sandwich is named after President Ramón Barros Luco, who would consistently order this combination of bread, thin slices of beef, and melted cheese every time he visited Confitería Torres in downtown Santiago, Chile.

A modern variation of the Barros Luco is the “Brazilian” sandwich, popular among Chilean truck drivers. In addition to the classic combination of beef and cheese, it includes mashed avocado, creating the iconic colors of the Brazilian flag, from which it gets its name.
