Premium Chilean Cheeses

According to Amazon’s latest quarterly results, the company increased its net sales by 13% compared to the same period last year, reaching USD 143.3 billion.

In North America, net sales increased by 12%, rising from USD 76.881 billion to USD 86.341 billion. Additionally, data indicates that in the United States, 7,000 products are sold per minute.

This is a perfect scenario for the four small cheese-producing companies from the Los Lagos Region, which will begin exporting and selling their products on Amazon USA in the coming months.

This has been made possible through the program “Exporting Quality Cheeses from the Los Lagos Region to the World,” co-financed by Corfo, operated by Codesser, and managed by LAP, a Chilean startup focused on cross-border eCommerce.

About this program, the regional director (s) of Corfo Los Lagos, David Espinoza, states:

The inclusion of premium cheeses from the Los Lagos Region on Amazon USA is a clear example of the success of Corfo’s Red Mercado program. This tool has been fundamental in connecting Chilean SMEs with international markets, facilitating their expansion and global positioning. The incorporation of cheeses represents an important milestone that demonstrates the effectiveness of this program, which not only opens new opportunities for local SMEs but also strengthens Chile’s image as a producer of high-quality food products. We will continue to support more local companies in their journey towards internationalization, ensuring they have the necessary tools and support to compete and succeed in the global market.

Sachi De La Cuadra, Codesser Manager for Los Lagos, comments:

The RED Mercado project, Exporting Quality Cheeses from the Los Lagos Region to the World, has been a great opportunity for the producer companies involved in this project. It provides the necessary knowledge and guidance to start the process of exporting their cheeses. This initiative, funded by Corfo, stands out as a pioneer in the region, aiming to showcase the existing export potential of the Los Lagos Region through its food products. It is expected that this instance will pave the way for the export of food products from the Los Lagos Region to the world.

There are four pioneering Chilean SMEs – all from the south of our country – that will enter this platform with their dairy products and are currently preparing and acquiring all the necessary knowledge to export and boost their first sales in the North American market through Amazon.

One of them is Lácteos Maipué, producers of chanco and mantecoso cheeses – in various formats – made with raw materials from the commune of Purranque.

Jessica Sánchez, the legal representative of this SME, comments:

This is a great opportunity to export our products thanks to what we have learned about eCommerce sales and thus be able to open up to new markets worldwide.

Also part of this project is Lacteos Puyehue, a family SME with 66 years of history in the south of our country. They have 13 types of cheeses, gluten-free, divided into three groups: soft, semi-hard, hard, and grated cheeses.

The third small company benefiting from this program is Orígenes del Campo, which has a sustainable production chain resulting in 100% natural products free of chemical preservatives that come from “happy cows.”

Additionally, they have eco-friendly packaging. They offer a variety of gourmet butters, natural and flavored cream cheeses, Brie and Camembert cheeses, among others.

The fourth SME landing in the United States is Mario Santana’s cheeses, characterized by being mantecosos and artisanal.

About this initiative, LAP co-founder Felipe Reyes indicates:

We are in a preparatory phase where these small dairy companies and cheesemakers are acquiring various knowledge, from the entry regulations to the United States to how to manage their orders, inventories, and shipments simply and easily, among other important details that will allow them to maximize their commercial and logistical management in the country where they are marketing their products.

He concludes:

We are confident that these SMEs, once they start exporting and enter Amazon, will have great reception and acceptance from North American consumers, who will be able to enjoy premium 100% Chilean products made with natural ingredients from our country, making them unique. With this, I believe that this variety of cheeses has high added value and potential to be sold in this market.
